    Remember, 1987

Born in 1910 Georges Visat entered the School of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1929 and studied the usual curriculum. Back from the War after five years of emprisonment he created numerous paintings in black based on the notion that color was perhaps superfluous for expressing everyday reality. One day in discouragement he destroyed his entire production and concentrated henceforth on engraving. Finally, in 1970, he returned to painting.

... The rest of the story follows in his own words:

"During these early years my engraving studio was visited by quite a few artists, some of which were quite famous [Max Ernst, Matta., Braque, Dorothea Tanning...] - I was no doubt quite influenced by them. There is however no Cartesian evolution in my work. I act out of instinct according to solicitations that I do not control.

"My first brush strokes are never made with certainty - I am attracted to an atmosphere: the act of painting, with its mystery, is what gets me going. At the outset there is no intention to establish a subject but simply to spread out some colors for the pleasure of it. Often the results are nil. I repaint the canvas without success, and sometimes it's like a stroll to the center of town where, at a street corner I suddenly perceive an architectural detail which makes me think of a cathedral. The same phenomenon repeats itself in my drawing. I take off with a detail and from that moment and that moment only I think of a subject.

"... In our makeup are organized electro-magnetically, but the organization which lies beyond our control. The originality of this organization which extends to the five senses is distinguished by the diversity of sense groups which have different powers of reception. I can feel this, but I am unable to identify it or to put it into a structure.

"The influences that can orient an artist? They are many and you could write a whole book on the subject. I believe that the artist, in whatever area he works, is an antenna that perceives orders whose source of he never knows. We hide this mystery with the holy word "inspiration." Music and sounds open for me a path of visual expression. The next day they have provided me with painted works, "usable ideas," and then it's just a matter of each creator giving them a peronsal signature."
